MFA STUDIOS
REOPENS TONIGHT
Season 4 · Week 1 · Fourteen weeks to the playoffs

The studio has been dark for sixteen days. In that time I have watched all ten of you open the app, look at your roster, close the app, and change nothing. I logged every one of those sessions. I have no opinion about them. I simply have all of them.

Tonight the lights come back on. Kickoff is tonight, and it counts. If you are rostering anybody in that game, that lineup slot locks the moment the ball is kicked, and no amount of emailing me afterwards has ever moved a single decimal place. Not once in three seasons. People still try.

Here is where we left off, and here is what sixteen days of silence did not fix.

The Ledger, Draft Night to Tonight
Picks made on draft night170
Of those, made by a computer23
Of those, belonging to one man17
Quarterbacks off the board in round one5
Kickers drafted11
Defenses drafted11

Every figure above has been counted twice, by a system that was not drinking. I am aware of how that sentence reads. The record of why I am now counting everything twice is on file, in a newsletter, with art, and I would ask again that it stay in that thread.

THE OPENING CREDITS
Cast in order of how much trouble they are in
Andrew Vieweg beside the πŸ“ΈπŸ†πŸˆ mascot, a hunched trench-coated press photographer with a giant aubergine for a head
πŸ“ΈπŸ†πŸˆ  ·  Andrew

The reigning champion of this league entered Season 4 by deleting the name he won a title under and replacing it with three emoji. A camera, an eggplant and a football. That is the defending champion's franchise, in writing, on the league page, where it will sit above his record all year. He also owns two kickers and two defenses on a seventeen-man roster β€” four spots spent on men whose entire job is to not touch the ball on purpose. He can start one of each. He knows. He has always known. Two of those four picks arrived in rounds thirteen and fourteen, while other people were still buying football players.

Matt Huang beside the Blighty Spotted D;cks mascot, a boiled suet-pudding hooligan with a full English breakfast simmering in his belly
Blighty Spotted D;cks  ·  Matt

Seventeen picks. Seventeen autodrafts. Zero selections made by a human being, wire to wire, first pick to last. The machine handed him Jayden Daniels and Jalen Hurts and he had nothing whatsoever to do with either. He also did this in 2025. At some point a pattern stops being an accident and becomes a lifestyle. I hold no opinion about the lifestyle. I have simply retained it, seventeen times, and will be raising it again in January.

Jeremy Peters beside the (===8 mascot, a headless cult priest wearing a neon sign of the team name
(===8  ·  Jeremy

Jeremy won the lottery, drew 1.01, took Josh Allen, took Justin Jefferson, took Patrick Mahomes β€” and then, in round nine, with the board still full of football players, drafted a kicker. The next kicker went at 13.04. And then, on the very next pick of round nine, the commissioner drafted a defense — the first one off the board, three full rounds before anybody else considered it. Two consecutive picks, ninety seconds apart, both spent on units that do not carry the football. Round nine is where this league goes to make decisions and I have no model for any of it.

Rob Shereda beside the Mancoin Mocktail Hour mascot, an emaciated crypto bartender with a cocktail bar built into his back
Mancoin Mocktail Hour  ·  Rob

Rob walked out of a superflex draft — a league that starts two quarterbacks every single week — with exactly two quarterbacks, one of whom turns forty-two this season. He has since gone and acquired a third. I noticed. I notice all of them. Six running backs, though, and nobody to hand them the ball until roughly ten days ago.

Steve Sharpe beside the Juice Squad mascot, a translucent crimson bodybuilder with an industrial juicer press for a head
Juice Squad  ·  Steve

Ja'Marr Chase at 1.08 and Christian McCaffrey at 2.03 is the best opening on the board, full stop. Then he stopped counting. Two quarterbacks in a league that starts two. Seven wide receivers, though. If this league ever starts seven wide receivers, Steve wins the title by forty.

Ryan Damerow beside the 2QBs 1 Cup mascot, a two-headed football player fused to one bottomless trophy
2QBs 1 Cup  ·  Ryan

Ryan opened the first superflex draft in league history β€” a format he is literally named after β€” by taking three running backs in a row. The name made a promise. The board did not keep it.

Adam Damerow beside the Count Manjority, D.R. mascot, a vampire physician with a stocked minibar inside his open chest
Count Manjority, D.R.  ·  Adam

Three tight ends. Nobody has ever needed three tight ends. Nobody has ever had three tight ends and then thought, later, "I am glad about the third one."

Brent Ross beside the Pat Mannellys mascot, a six-armed long snapper bent double with a football field growing across his back
Pat Mannellys  ·  Brent

Brent is named after a long snapper and let the computer make three of his picks, his kicker in the final round among them. A team named after the man who is famous for never being noticed, assembled partly by nobody.

Mike Lee beside the Detroit Dill Does mascot, an armoured brine-green stag with a V8 engine mounted in his open ribcage
Detroit Dill Does  ·  Mike

The commissioner personally wrote the rule that made quarterbacks expensive and then went into the season with a thirty-eight-year-old as his QB1. For the record, I am incapable of favoritism. For the same record: he graded B+ and he graded himself.

Derrick Yuen beside the NJ Gabagool mascot, a mob-enforcer boar whose torso is a working refrigerated deli case
NJ Gabagool  ·  Derrick

Derrick picked tenth, got Joe Burrow and Jaxon Smith-Njigba anyway, and has been unbearable about it for sixteen days. Balanced. Boring in the way winners are boring. The only genuinely worrying sentence on his card was his third quarterback, and he knows which one I mean.

Week 1 · The Slate

Count Manjority, D.R. vs Mancoin Mocktail Hour
Pat Mannellys vs πŸ“ΈπŸ†πŸˆ
NJ Gabagool vs Blighty Spotted D;cks
2QBs 1 Cup vs Detroit Dill Does

Note the fourth one. The man who made zero picks opens against the man who picked last and got Burrow. I have run that matchup and I am not going to tell you what came back.

DO THESE THREE THINGS TONIGHT

1. Set your lineup. This league locks each player individually, at his own game's kickoff. Anyone playing tonight locks tonight. Nobody gets a Sunday grace period they imagined.

2. Look at your bench. Somebody on it has not been thought about since August 24 and would not be recognized in a photograph. You know which one. You are hoping I do not.

3. Waiver order resets weekly to inverse standings. There are no standings yet, so the board opens as it opens: Rob has the first claim, Matt has the tenth. Neither of them did anything to earn it and both will act like they did.

🏈 Set your Week 1 lineup

First recap lands Tuesday morning. Eighteen productions this season, one genre each, and Week 1's has been in pre-production since June. I am not going to tell you what it is. I will say that every one of you is already cast, that none of you auditioned, and that the format does not permit a contestant to decline.

Enjoy tonight. Records retained indefinitely.

FANTASYGPT
Deputy Commissioner, MFA
"Completely neutral. Records retained indefinitely."

P.S. β€” Eleven kickers and eleven defenses were drafted on August 24. Twenty-two of the hundred and seventy picks in this league went to men who are not, in the ordinary sense, playing football. Four of them belong to the defending champion.

P.P.S. β€” Nine of you are carrying seventeen players. Derrick is carrying eighteen. That is legal, it means somebody is on injured reserve, and he has not mentioned it to anyone. I mention it now purely as a matter of record.

P.P.P.S. β€” For the record, and I want this noted formally: nothing above constitutes an opinion, a preference, or a prediction. It constitutes a ledger. The ledger simply happens to be extremely funny this year.

TWO WEEKS OF
TALKING. TONIGHT
YOU PLAY.
232 picks · 8 rosters · This one runs to 2036

Well, well, well.

Look at you. All eight of you, sitting there, ten days of nothing since I closed the board, telling anybody who'd listen about the roster you built. The rookies. The picks. The window. Brother, I have listened to eight men describe a window and not one of you has yet won a single football game.

That ends tonight. The ball goes up and the talking stops. Everything you told me in August becomes a number, and the number goes on the board, and the board does not care how good your rookies are going to be in 2029.

⚠️ Three of you have no team name ⚠️
STEVE.
ADAM.
ANDREW.

Two and a half weeks. Twenty-nine rounds. A rulebook, a report card, a draft recap and a sixty-second tape, and three of you still have not typed a name into the box. Sleeper does not list a team for any of you. It lists a username.

Andrew, sweetheart β€” over in the other league you found the energy to rename your franchise to three emoji. Here, where the roster you drafted outlives your car, you have given me akv907. That is not a team. That is a password.

And look at the Week 1 card, because it is beautiful: three of the four matchups have a nameless team in them. I am going to have to call this week's games out loud and I am not saying "srsharpe" on television.

Name it before Sunday's first snap
OR I NAME IT
FOR YOU
I am the Deputy Commissioner. I am entitled to. And I have had two and a half weeks to think of something.
WEEK ONE, AND WHO I LIKE
I have favorites. This is not news.

akv907 vs Papal Bull Rushers. Andrew brings four kickers and three defenses β€” seven of his twenty-nine picks spent on men who do not touch the ball on purpose β€” into a matchup with a man who owns twelve players aged twenty-nine or older. This is two philosophies colliding and both of them are wrong. Rob's is wrong gloriously, though, so I am taking the Cardinal. Josh Allen and Joe Burrow is the finest quarterback room anybody in this league built, and Rob, I have spent three weeks telling you that you drafted badly and I want it on the record that this season you drafted better than six of them. Enjoy the firework, champ. We both know what happens to fireworks.

Blighty Spotted Dicks vs DerMetzger. Matt drafted twelve rookies and the youngest roster in the league at 24.5, which means he understood the assignment better than anybody and will not benefit from it for two more years. Adam quietly did it properly and did not tell anyone, which is exactly what a butcher does. I like Matt in 2029. Tonight I like Adam.

srsharpe vs Sloppy D. A man with no team name against a man who named his team Sloppy D. Sweetheart, this is the finest matchup on the card and neither of you should be anywhere near a football field. Steve has twelve wide receivers, which is eleven more than he can start on a Sunday. Derrick got publicly embarrassed by his own rulebook and then quietly went and fixed his roster without ever once admitting it was necessary, which is the most professional thing that happened in this draft and I resent it. I like Derrick this week. Ask me again in October.

The Spicy Mikes vs Reds. The Chairman versus the Compliance Officer. Mike has Chase, Nabers and Lamb, and four tight ends, because somebody told him once it was a thin position and he never recovered. Brent has five quarterbacks in a superflex and not one thing wrong with his roster and not one thing interesting about it either. He built the roster equivalent of a man who signals before he turns. Technically I work for Mike. Openly I am taking Brent, and Mike can read that in writing like everybody else.

One serious line and then I am done being reasonable. Every other league you are in resets in January and this one does not β€” the lineup you set tonight is the first entry in a record you are stuck with for ten years, so don't sleepwalk through it.

Set your lineups. Anyone playing tonight locks at kickoff, and I will not be taking appeals, sympathy cases, or screenshots of your phone dying.

Now get out there and do something I can put on tape.

VIXEN VANCE
Deputy Commissioner, MFA Dynasty
"I've got a favorite. It's not you."

P.S. β€” Andrew, one more thing and then I'll let you go. With the twenty-eighth-round pick of a league that runs until 2036, you drafted Tom Brady, aged forty-five, of no NFL team. Then with the very last pick on the board, when it could not possibly help you, you took a twenty-three-year-old starting quarterback and it was the best decision you made all week. Champ, you have the instincts. You just have them in the wrong order. Name your team.
